Itinerary

DAY 1

CUSCO – SORAYPAMPA – ICHUPATA

On the first day of the challenging Salkantay trek to Machu Picchu, we start early from Cusco, have breakfast in Mollepata with stunning views of the Salkantay and Humantay mountains. After exploring Humantay Lake, we hike uphill for 5-6 hours to reach Ichupata at 4,300 meters. Lunch at Salkantaypampa, and our camp at Ichupata is ready with tents and a welcome tea.

DAY 2

ICHUPATA – INCACHIRIASCA – PAMPACAHUANA

After a hearty breakfast, we embark on a challenging 3 to 4-hour uphill hike towards the Incachiriasca Pass at 4,850 meters, the highest point of the journey. Here, we’re greeted with breathtaking views of the Salkantay and its glaciers, capturing photographs and relishing the scenery. We then descend to Sisaypampa for lunch, where picturesque views of the surrounding valleys can be admired, and the possibility of spotting condors exists. After lunch, we continue to the community of Pampacahuana at 3,700 meters, located next to an original Inca canal, where we set up our camp for the night.

DAY 3

PAMPACAHUANA – PAUCARCANCHA – HUAYLLABAMBA

After exploring, we’ll embark on a downhill hike of up to 3 hours to reach the village of Huayllabamba for lunch. Then, we’ll continue our descent to the Urubamba River, passing through the first section of the Inca Trail. On this day, we’ll have the opportunity to visit the archaeological complex of Patallaqta, known for its semicircular buildings, and the nearby Inca site of Willcaraqay. By nightfall, we’ll reach km 82, where our transport will pick us up to take us to Ollantaytambo for an overnight stay.

DAY 4

OLLANTAYTAMBO – WIÑAYWAYNA – PUERTA DEL SOL – MACHUPICCHU

In the morning, we head to the train station and take an hour-long train ride to KM 104 (2,100 meters) where we commence a three-hour moderate hike to Wiñayhuayna (2,650 meters). From there, we enjoy breathtaking views of the Urubamba Canyon and the finest Inca architecture. Continuing on the ancient Inca trail, we reach the Sun Gate (2,730 meters), providing majestic vistas of Machu Picchu and its sacred mountains. We then descend to Aguas Calientes for an overnight stay.

DAY 5

AGUAS CALIENTES – MACHUPICCHU – CUSCO

This day, we start early with a visit to Machu Picchu, following entry and taking the circuit number 2, which includes highlights like the Guardian’s House and the Temple of the Sun. After about three hours of exploration, we exit the site and take the bus back to Aguas Calientes for lunch. Later on, we board the train for the return journey to Ollantaytambo and eventually arrive back in Cusco at around 7:00 p.m.
